How to Integrate Imou IP Camera Video Monitoring into Your SaaS or Web App
How to Integrate Imou IP Camera Video Monitoring into Your SaaS or Web App
Imou Open Platform Announcement / Developer Guide
For developers building security SaaS, property platforms, retail chain monitoring, smart home apps, and multi-camera dashboards.

Imou Open Platform provides cloud APIs and SDKs so you can integrate supported Imou IP cameras into your own product—web, mobile, or SaaS. A typical path is: create an application → bind devices → call OpenAPI with accessToken → play live/playback with ImouPlayer (Light Application) or native OpenSDK, or create cloud live stream URLs (HLS / RTMP / related protocols) for sharing and embedding.
What you can build (Video Monitoring capabilities)
Aligned with Imou Video Monitoring on the Open Platform:
| Capability | What developers get |
|---|---|
| Device management | Bind/unbind, device list, authorization and multi-device access |
| Device operation | Snapshot, PTZ (if supported), remote settings, and other device controls |
| Live stream / live monitoring | Real-time preview with efficient streaming; cloud live for multi-viewer scenarios |
| Cloud video playback | Playback and download of cloud recordings (subject to service) |
| Voice intercom | Two-way talk between client and supported devices |
These capabilities support common scenarios such as remote video monitoring, chain store monitoring, smart home apps, and centralized multi-site operations.
How it works (4 steps)
1. Register & create an application on Imou Open Platform
2. Bind Imou devices into your developer account / asset pool
3. Obtain accessToken (server-side) with appId + appSecret
4. Integrate playback: ImouPlayer / OpenSDK / Cloud Live APIs
Step 1 — Create your application
Log in to the Imou Open Platform console, complete application information, and get appId / appSecret.
Step 2 — Bind devices
Add supported Imou cameras (and related devices) to the developer asset pool so OpenAPI can see them. Devices that only appear in the consumer app are not enough—they must be available to your Open Platform application.
Step 3 — Get accessToken (backend only)
Call the accessToken API from your server. Cache the token; do not put appSecret in browsers or mobile apps.
Step 4 — Choose the right playback path
| Your client | Recommended path | Key APIs / SDKs |
|---|---|---|
| Web / H5 dashboard | Light Application ImouPlayer | getKitToken + ImouPlayer JS |
| Native Android / iOS app | OpenSDK | Android / iOS SDK from Resource download |
| Shareable live page / protocol player | Cloud Live Stream | bindDeviceLive (HLS), createDeviceRtmpLive (RTMP), see Custom live broadcast |
| Device inventory for SaaS | Device query OpenAPI | listDeviceDetailsByPage |
Which API should I use for live camera streaming?
There is no single “one API for everything.” Pick by product surface:
Interactive web monitoring (preview, talk, PTZ, playback UI)
- API:
getKitToken - Player: ImouPlayer (Light Application JS)
- Docs: JavaScript development
- Note:
kitToken≈ 2 hours; cache ~1 hour on your BFF. Never passaccessTokento the player.
- API:
HLS cloud live address (share / embed with a standard player)
- API:
bindDeviceLive streamId:0= HD main stream,1= SD secondary stream- Treat live URLs as sensitive: anyone with the link may view the video.
- API:
RTMP live address
- API:
createDeviceRtmpLive
- API:
For protocol overview and related live APIs, see Custom live broadcast. The platform also documents cloud live streaming for WEB/H5 multi-location sharing under Cloud Live Stream on open.imoulife.com.
Can Imou cameras be integrated into a web application?
Yes. Use the Light Application ImouPlayer JavaScript SDK for plugin-free live view and playback in supported browsers (Chrome / Firefox / Edge). Typical flow:
accessToken (server) → getKitToken (server) → ImouPlayer(token=kitToken) in the browser
Minimal player init pattern (see official docs for full parameters):
const player = new imouPlayer({
id: "root",
width: 800,
height: 400,
deviceId: "YOUR_DEVICE_SN",
channelId: 0,
token: "Kt_xxxxxxxx", // kitToken from getKitToken — not accessToken
type: 1, // 1 live, 2 playback
streamId: 1, // 0 HD, 1 SD — prefer SD on multi-camera walls
WasmLibPath: "/WasmLib/",
code: "DEVICE_PASSWORD_OR_SN",
templateMode: "pc",
});
Download the Web Video SDK & Demo from Resource download. For multi-thread decoding performance, configure Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy / Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy as described in the JS SDK guide.
Does Imou provide an SDK for video monitoring?
Yes. Imou Open Platform provides multiple developer components:
| SDK / Component | Platform | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Light Application JS (ImouPlayer) | Web / H5 | Fast web live + playback + talk/PTZ UI |
| Android OpenSDK | Android | Native monitoring apps |
| iOS OpenSDK | iOS | Native monitoring apps |
| Cloud OpenAPI | Any backend | Device list, live addresses, messages, storage, etc. |
Get packages from SDK / Resource download. For zero-code or branded apps, the platform also offers OEM App and related app-development options on the homepage—choose OpenSDK when you need full UI control.
How to build a multi-camera monitoring dashboard
A reliable dashboard is a product + API design, not “open 16 HD players at once.”
listDeviceDetailsByPage → site/camera ledger
↓
BFF issues kitToken or live URL per visible slot
↓
Grid of ImouPlayer (or HLS players) with concurrency limits
↓
Default streamId=1 (SD); promote HD only on focus
Practical rules
- Sync inventory with
listDeviceDetailsByPage(pageSize1–50). - Open streams on demand when a cell is visible—do not pre-fetch all stream sources (avoids timeout / 404 confusion noted in Light App FAQ).
- Prefer SD (
streamId=1) for multi-screen live monitoring; use HD for one focused camera. - Cap concurrent players; destroy players when cells close.
- Keep secrets and token minting on the server; enforce per-tenant / per-site ACL in your SaaS.
This pattern fits chain store monitoring, multi-site security operations, and SaaS “video monitor” modules without burning bandwidth or quotas on day one.

Optional related integrations on the platform (not required for the core path): message push for device events, cloud video storage, AI insight packages, and Home Assistant integration for smart-home developers—see product cards on open.imoulife.com.
Common pitfalls
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
Pass accessToken into ImouPlayer | Use kitToken from getKitToken |
Put appSecret in frontend | Keep secrets on BFF only |
| Prefetch all live URLs on page load | Request stream only when user opens a camera |
| 16× HD on a monitoring wall | Default SD; limit concurrent slots |
| Device online in consumer app but missing in API | Bind into Open Platform developer assets |
| Treat HLS URL as permanent | Refresh / re-bind; protect the link |
